Oil Can Dummy Load

#407848

Post by Bigdog3 »

Hello all I have an oil can dummy load made from a 1 gallon size metal paint can with oil inside for cooling. Over time the seam of the bottom of the can started seeping a little oil so I wanted to replace the can. I dumped the old oil out in a nearby trout stream " Take it easy just kidding" I have a friend that is a lineman for our local power company and he took it where they dump there transformer oil for disposal. The resister connectors where a little rough so I dismantled the whole setup and cleaned all the corrosion from connectors. My Question is while I had just the resistor out from everything else I wanted to test it. It appears to be a carbon rod of some sort with a brass end on each end. When testing just the resistor alone at the brass ends I am reading 81 ohms not 50 ohms. Does that tell me maybe it is for something other than 11 meters or just worn out. I did try downloading pics. no luck I made them small enough to be under 2m and tested in testing are 3 time and it says they are there but when previewed I don't see them no big deal

The dummy load after assembled should read in the 50ohm range plus or minus an ohm or two. The rod and cube are to dissipate heat to the oil under high wattage and they are also part of achieving the 50ohms. The dummy load isn't specific to 11m, should range all of the HF band and some. If the can was old, it probably used "PCB" transformer oil, changing it to mineral oil might affect the SWR.

Bigdog 3, your post just reminded me I have a brand new old stock gallon dummy load can around somewhere... actually I haven't seen in in several years, but pretty sure its still around somewhere. If I can find it, I'll check it out empty and see what it reads to see how much air vs submerged in oil will change the resistance reading.

I put my dummy load in a plastic pan or you could use a plate, this insulates the tin can from the floor especially if it is a concrete floor. If the can starts to leak hopefully you will see it before it overflows the pan. Makes for easier cleanup.
