Thanks Sonoma, anyone have any experience with these microphones? I've heard good things about Shure and know they make alot of professional mics.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
Well, the manual only shows the internal connections for the switch inside the mic. I don't see the info for what wire to what pin on a 4 pin connector.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
well it says shield is grd. it goes to pin 1, then white is audio that would be pin 2. black should be receive pin 4 and red transmit pin 3.
if the mic is wired right it should be like I just wrote out
1-- shield
2 white
3 red
4 black
the only thing that could be different if it squeals is pin 3 and 4 could be back wards. make sure the white wire is inside the shield also. any thing this old could have had the wires changed from breakage. you could have any color inside the cord if it has been changed.
I did not see a jumper for receive mod to grd. you may have to put one in since this mic was made for a relay circuit which the radio did not have to have the mic hooked up to receive. , just a thought.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
the way I check the wires on a mic if I do not know for sure is open the 4 pin connector up. find the shield wire and put a ohm meter to the shield wire. take the other lead and check each pin until you get continuity. that is shield and receive wires. leave the lead to the shield wire and ket the mic and when you have continuity that will be the transmit wire. then check the next wire and you should read ohms any where from 500 to 5000 ohm and that is the audio wire feeding through the mic element. doing it this way you know what wire goes to what pin.

Good info, but no good if the mic wire has been clipped and there is NO connector as is the case with this one.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
this is simple with the ifo I gave you, can you look at the wires and find the shield wire. then check each wire as I told you and I gave you the list of the pin numbers for a cobra radio.
I shield
2 audio
3 tx
4 rx.
I do not understand why this is a no go if you have all the info other than wire colors. what colors do you have coming out of the cord that you said is cut off.

No, no I get that, we're good. I was just saying you cannot test one in the manner you were describing if it has NO connector on it. But I have the info I need to wire the mic.

That's what sonoma is saying, with the info he gave you, you don't need a connector or even wire colors.Sporty Mike wrote:No, no I get that, we're good. I was just saying you cannot test one in the manner you were describing if it has NO connector on it. But I have the info I need to wire the mic.

Re-read that post.....I don't see how those instructions could be followed WITHOUT a connector when it specifically says "open the 4 pin connector up "......maybe it's just me.sonoma wrote:the way I check the wires on a mic if I do not know for sure is open the 4 pin connector up. find the shield wire and put a ohm meter to the shield wire. take the other lead and check each pin until you get continuity. that is shield and receive wires. leave the lead to the shield wire and ket the mic and when you have continuity that will be the transmit wire. then check the next wire and you should read ohms any where from 500 to 5000 ohm and that is the audio wire feeding through the mic element. doing it this way you know what wire goes to what pin.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
The point was simply to find the shield. If the cable has a connector open it, if it doesn't have a connector the shield is easy to find and the rest is historySporty Mike wrote:Re-read that post.....I don't see how those instructions could be followed WITHOUT a connector when it specifically says "open the 4 pin connector up "......maybe it's just me.sonoma wrote:the way I check the wires on a mic if I do not know for sure is open the 4 pin connector up. find the shield wire and put a ohm meter to the shield wire. take the other lead and check each pin until you get continuity. that is shield and receive wires. leave the lead to the shield wire and ket the mic and when you have continuity that will be the transmit wire. then check the next wire and you should read ohms any where from 500 to 5000 ohm and that is the audio wire feeding through the mic element. doing it this way you know what wire goes to what pin.

Yes and some things are MUCH, MUCH more easily understood by some of us when seen or heard in person. Short descriptions on internet forums can at times be vague for some of us, and for that I apologize. Thank you both for the info.

Ok here are the wires in this mic. cord that is on the Shure.
Ok wouldn't let me post the pic for some reason but it has a black, red, shield, and blue wrapped in tin.
What goes where?

The wire colors don't seem to match, you're just going to have to do as sonoma suggested, although I would assume blue is your audio wire.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
Ok, but again there are no "pins " so I just follow the directions and test the wire itself as opposed to a pin on the connector? [img][Please login or register to view this link][/img]

You found the shield ...... that goes to pin 1.Sporty Mike wrote:it has a black, red, shield, and blue wrapped in tin.
Blue would appear to be audio ....... that would be pin 2.
Now for the black and red, one would be tx and one rx. You can either put them on 3 and 4, then reverse them if it doesn't work, or test them like sonoma suggested.

Not at the moment, the Craftsman digital one I've had for twenty years quit working. I'm gonna go with what I have at this point if the worst case scenario is I have to reverse two wires then that's no Biggee. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
Well here's what happened, neither way worked black and red on 3 or 4 both produced no receive and buzzing on key up. The blue is in fact white and it and the shield are on 2 and 1, respectively.

Since the wire colors do in fact match and you don't have a meter, I'd pop the mic apart and see what you have in there compared to the manual.

Re: Need wiring code for Shure 401A
does the blue wire run through the middle of the shield. the audio wire will run inside the shield just like a piece of coax,
