PEP/SSB
PEP/SSB
Today I went down to Richmond and was going by the 104 south on I-95, motor mouthin my radio. I got to talking to the guy at TJs Cb shop there at the Petro and we were talking about radios (what else) He said that it does not matter how big a hot box is that the Loudness of your radio is completely not related he said my radio was loud but that it will be no louder with an amp. I will just have some distance but that PEP is only related to talking on side band I said he should check this forum. He said "no offense " we need to get some education. He said further more if you are running a box that does 200 watts or 10000 watts you might under the right conditions get half of those watts talking on straight 40 but PEP only swings if your on SSB. None of this sounds right but that is the point of posting it in case anyone else has been givin this info.
I think this is one of those that Mike will need to set strait but if I understand correctly, PEP ( Peak Envelope Power ? I think ) is the max power being put out with whatever input being used. IE If you say Aaaaaudio into the mic, the max power it the PEP. If you measure PEP on Am then you know what it is there, If you measure on SSB then you know what the PEP on ssb is.
On power, you will only recieve so much power before it is just noise. More power makes it like you are closer. Example. If you have a buddy with a new cobra 29 sitting 50 feet from you and a buddy running a 1X3 at 2 miled from you and a buddy runnin 16 pills sittin 20 miles from you they will all sound just as powerful as each other. The more power the further you will reach.
Mike, please correct me if Im wrong.

One point, an amp won't make a radio louder, just give it more,,,more distance,, an amp does make the radio more powerful, a bad radio still sounds bad with an amp,,,a great radio sounds great with an amp,,,not really sure what the guy was trying to sell you,,LOL,,,but I have heard a SWP radios, without an amp and with,,,,they are Bodacious!!!!
Now for those who always think I'm selling for RA, I don't have a SWP radio, I speak the truth about Mike's radios, they are the loudest I have heard, with 30 years on the radio,,,and the best warranty!!
