Hi wrong way,

I run an HR 2510 barefoot with a Wilson 1000 Trunk mount. Sideband is the only way to go; it is 4 times as efficient, and has half the receive noise. I can talk twice as far on SSB than I can on AM. There are more gentlemen and some ladies on SSB, and it is easier to shoot skip. We have a local sideband club here. They are on 3 times a day, everyday at the same time each day. That is the only way I find that you can use SSB on a regular basis.

AM is alright; if you want to break trucker's chops, and put up with all that back ground noise. It is more common because there is always someone on it; on some channel all day long. The radio can be 1,000 Hertz off on AM and no one can tell the difference. On SSB if you are off by 50 Hertz it makes a difference.

I am into SSB, but when I need talk to someone for a radio check, or get information, then I have to use AM to make contact. If you are ever feel like talking about Sideband I am around.
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Are you from ohio? theres a ssb club in southern ohio a local told me (and I talked ssb with him) and I here people talk about it but my 98 is all I have with ssb that would be any good and its my work radio I hear there is an auction in southern oh on tuesday nights but I only have my 98 at work.

Hi Guys,

SSB is the thing I want to learn about and use, too...I love my General Lee, but there isn't much talking round these parts except for truckers (I love truckers, don't get me wrong) so I really want to study up on SSB...

So, I'm sure I will be posting questions in this forum very soon, lol....

well around here in northern virginia i get these guys from laplata maryland on the ground wave. when the skip rolls in i can hit novascotia to florida easy on sideband. since there carryer signal is supressed in ssb, it takes less energy to put it out far. just listen to channel 38lsb and at about 12pm and later the skip can roll in pretty good.
38 lsb and listening!

Wow, Tucson Annie! I haven't seen you post on here in a long time. The last time I saw you post I was still in Tampa. Now I'm in Colorado Springs.

CB Doctor...we've talked through email. You worked on a 2000 for me and we've talked about the RFX 75 module on a Grant. I had a weird thing happen to my 2510 in the truck today...the channel/frequency selector got smooth. What I mean is that it is indented and "clicks" to each "channel." All of a sudden it stopped doing that. It feels like a regular VFO knob now with no tension whatsoever. So, I put that Grant XL in the truck until I can figure out who to fix the 2510...and scrape up the money to do it with.

Anyway, I really like SSB and I wish there was some SSB activity here. I only hear a small group and they only run on 19 that I've heard.

Good to see you (so to speak) Circuit Breaker!

I'm thinking about getting a Superstar 36 from Mr. Radioactive....I was reading a bit last night and it seems inexpensive and would be fun to learn with...what do you guys think? Or should I consider something else?

I have a Cobra GTL DX but when I was living in my other place and setting it up as a base, it ran really hot and made me nervous ( I was living in an apartment at the time, heh)....

I'll do some more research as I continue to sort through my boxes of equipment getting everything back out...like my slinky dipoles, lol.....but any advice as always is greatly appreciated!

Annie :)

I've thought about a Superstar 36. I liked the older President/Uniden Grant radios and the Superstar is very similar to it. I don't know if it uses the same board or not though.

Hi Circuit Breaker,

Sorry to hear about the 2510. Don't throw it away. The selector control is just a momentary switch; unlike most radios. Instead of selecting a binary count all it does is pulse the microprocessor, and the microprocessor goes up or down depending which way you are turning it. You still have the ability to use the up/down button on the face.

It sounds like the spring that applies pressure to the contact inside the channel selector is broken. I have a couple of scrap radios that may work in the 2510. I believe the selector from an Emperor will work in the HR2510. Contact me, it is yours if you need it.
Respectfully as always,

Rick

Oh, I wasn't planning on getting rid of it. I figured it's a relatively easy thing to replace...sort of. I had to swap out a faceplate on my other 2510 and it was a pain in the back side to get all the controls off the old faceplate and then get everything back in the right way. It took a while but I eventually did it.
