Cant make contact on SSB

 Im really bummed out! Finally got some conditions here in South Dakota but I cant seem to make any contacts. I tried 38 lsb for about an hour total with no luck. I've got an older Cobra 148 hooked up to my old school Polomar tx75 running through a 102" whip. My swr is around 1.5 and I am putting out a solid 60 to 70w with the amp on. This is a new setup, it is a good local talker but I havent been able to make any skip contacts yet. I am wondering if opening up my clarifier would help? My last ssb radio had the clarifier unlocked and I had no trouble making contacts with it barefoot. Any thoughts?

If Skip is not running on the AM channels, then it's not going to be on SSB either. If you don't hear anyone on SSB, chances are condisions just are not there...But you could problably make some local contacts on SSB, if someones listening near by.

JJD, skip was rolling on AM as well as SSB. I could hear people talking all over the place but couldent get a response. I've talked skip many times, just havent had any luck with this new setup. Lonesome, I was getting California and Arizona but not much else.

Hey guys, I just made my first contact on the SSB, 38 L. I'm still stuck in Denver,Co but my contact was in Sacramento, Ca. Told me I was making the trip with strong signal and asked if I had heater on. Took me a second to figure what he was talking about. Replied back a Grant XL with some channels but no heater. Told me don't do nothing to it it sounds good for a mud duck plucker, but get a heater.

Also hearing a guy out of Southern Idaho but he will not reply back to me. He will talk to the other guys I'm talking with but told them seeing I'm a CB'r he will not talk to me. Why is it nobody wants to help a NEWB out and answer a few questions on the airwaves?

Opening up the clarifier will have absolutely effect on your ability to make contacts. if conditions are good, you'll make the contacts....if not then you'll just get a sore throat trying.
