I think the Ranger RCI 2995's are like $695 aren't they?

You can get a mobile RCI 2970, 100 watts for $379

But for $500 you could get a jam up used ham rig. That's what I'd do. You'll have all of HF and maybe more depending on which one you picked plus all of the other features and qualities that come with a ham rig over a CB.

good luck ... let us know what you decide!

If you would prefer a new rig over a used ham rig, then I would recommend either the RCI 2970, Galaxy DX 95T2 or Galaxy DX 98VHP for that price range.

I run a peaked and tuned 95T2 and it's a real talker on AM and SSB. The built in amplifier is class AB1 for clean watts and it will do better than 150 AM and just shy of 200 SSB (PEP)

The 2970 should net you about the same output as the 95T2 and the 98VHP will go that a little better by about 50 watts.

I'd keep the cobra for am sound and go the ham rig route. You can get a new HF rig for not much over 500, and a NICE used one for less. Icom had their 718's on recently for $549 and after you witness the ssb quality and features of even the most BASIC ham rig, not much in the econimical 10 meter or cb category can compare. They have a pile of cabability, dsp receive, attenuation, a good preamp, computer interface ability on some, they're really rugged, and just a cut above. Heck, even a 10 year old cheaper one (yaesu 840, 757, 900, or kenwood, or icom of similar pedigree) would beat out anything in the Ranger line, and I'm a ranger fan, I own 2, and they're great for what they are, but there is better. That's why they cost more. Plus they do a very clean 100 watts, clean as in they make a good clean signal for a base. I grabbed an icom 718 recently for 350 with mic and power supply, and those deals are common. -drdx

I decided to just switch radio's around i brought my connex 4300 300 in the house and put the cobra in the truck. My only other ? would be i want to get away from the omni directional imaxx and in to a bigger antenna something like a moonraker any suggestions.
