SSB is great fun i use it often here in UK and talk to people all over the world.
As said you dont need much power and you dont need some super whack pack jing tong or any of the other so called upgrades.
Over here cb ers usually start out with a small chicken box as we call them, then they get power hungry and buy big linears and think they are cool cos they can key each other out. BUT as they get older and more mellow they work out that its more fun using low power while trying to get those distant contacts.
Anyway took ages to read all this and i had a good curry last nite so i am off to dump one hell of an am maul, just hope theres is plenty of toilet roll here!!!

Interesting you say that. Cause I actually have heard stations from BC calling out. As well as Alberta. Im in Eastern Ontario. Mind you this was a few weeks ago though. 38 lsb has been pretty full around here.Gravedigger wrote:Here in southeast B.C, Canada the same as most. LSB 38. Been about a month and a half since hearing any skip though. But like they say, that too shall pass. 73'S everyone.

Most of the SSB skip try to stay in the channel 36 to channel 40 range. I have even got some good SSB skip off the old channel 16. Channel 38LSB is the most popular channel and if you have the capability 27.555USB is very popular. Me, I flip between 36LSB, my home SSB and 38LSB.

Lower 38 seems to be where all the action is so I check there mostly. Anywhere from 35 on up to 40. I wish I could go up higher than 40 but there are no mods as of todays date for the 980ssb. As i understand it they're probably won't be either.

38lsb is great but sometimes it gets to be a train wreck there. One of my favorite channels is 27.425. Talk to a lot of boys out in Oklahoma and Texas there and a few from Florida. If you have your clarifier tied and it goes 5kc or an import try the half channels too, you'll find many guys in between channels talking especially when Europe rolls in. I also find a few guys from Australia on 27.420 when conditions are right. I like to scan the channels too, some of the best DX you find is on strange channels.

I talk on 27.385 (channel 38) with 12 watts. I also use that frequency as a propagation tool to let me know if there is an opening on 10/12 meters. On the other bands, it seems like everyone's listening and no one is talking. I leave channel 38 on all day and when the skip breaks the squelch, I talk all over the place.

any where in the freeband and especially the frequencies that end in 0 like 27.420, or 27.560 because alot of radios cant tune to the freq's ending in 0 there are fewer pile ups
and a LOT less interferance from far off stations .

Hey Johnny9, that's funny as you have the same setup for an antenna currently, I am using a k40 mag mount with a large steel plate on top of our Florida room (back porch) which has an aluminum roof. Going to Home Depot soon and get a ground rod lol.

I am new to SSB in the last month, but I will say this: now you have to spin the dial three times ... arguably you are getting more out of radio!
Uniden Bearcat BC355N, Galaxy 959, ICOM M-302, Baofeng GT-3s ... just making an electronic mess of things.

Why not 28.490 so you can talk to the techie's, .500 puts them out of their band use.Flapjack wrote:28.500 USB
Let's clarify this a little and say CB frequencies and include "FreeBand" too.
