That amp has the potential of drawing more current than your alternator can produce, then you start drawing from the batteries which has a maximum potential of 12v, then your alternator has to start working to charge your batteries and run the amp, etc, etc, it just snowballs. Best to have enough alternator to do the job which is easier than lugging around 500# of batteries, which again only have a 12v potential.

What do you drive that has a 160amp alt? I drive a diesel pickup and I think mine is only around 135 or so.

Problem with most 300 amp alternators is they don't put out much at idle...To get the full output you'll have to keep the motor rived-up...Another problem with some high output alternators like that, is once they get hot, your amps might drop quite a bit...
When I ran a 8 pill I had dual alternators...The factory alternator and a 200 amp alt. This set-up never had to have the engine's RPM's rived-up and never dimmed the lights...To run a 8 pill right, your going to also need a driver (pending on the radio) So first do some math and see how much amperage your going to need to supply your 8 pill, the truck, and driver...I would also double check with the alternator manufacturer what that 300 amp alt is suppose to do at idle speed...Some barely do 100amps, if that.
200 and 220 amp alternators usually will have quiet a bit more output at idle than the 300+ Alt's.
Only other thing you would need to be sure you do is up-grade your charge wire off the alternator to the battery. If your charge wire off the alternator first runs to the computer, add a second wire off the alternator straight to the battery...
Way I did my Suburban was I ran a new charge wire to the battery off the alternator, disconnected the original wire from alternator to the computer...There's still a original wire that runs from the battery back to the computer up by the radiator...Doing it this way you get more juice from the alternator to the battery first which is where you will also have your power wire from the amp connected.

X2. There's no replacement for displacement. Unfortunately it's a pain to fit a large case alt in some vehicles.
