Re: PICTURES OF YOUR SETUP
Thx Str8, The horn would definately cause some serious inner ear damage . I think the 1000 GTL has the best audio and receive out of all the rigs. The Royce is my latest unit and for an oldie it does an awsome job also.str8stroke wrote:crazydiamond, that is awesome set up!!!! Love the mic collection! Re: PICTURES OF YOUR SETUP
I couldn't even begin to tell you. I'm new to all this tube stuff. All i know is that it ups my signal 70/75 watts. Learning as i go so if anybody would like to explain this I'm all ears. Also theres a variable power pot on the rear of it to adjust the key (I think). I haven't messed with it as of yet because i dont want to do any damage. If anyone can explain to me where that needs to be set, or if running it W/O would be a bad idea, it would be greatly appreciated. As i turn the pot i can see the key go up or down depending on the direction the pot is turned in my meter. I just dont want to over do it if its not safe. Not trying to burn anything up.Low_Boy wrote:556.... I love that old Black Cat modulator. How does it work?

The variable tuner on the back of the Black Cat modulator does adjust the carrier output. I run one of those single 8417 tube modulators like yours. Only difference is my unit is the Seeker brand and not Black Cat. Other than the key circuits and how the meter is hooked up they are almost identical.
I keep mine at 15 watts carrier or less. All you do is turn it until the desired carrier it shown on your meter. I can’t remember which way lowers or raises the carrier at the moment. Don’t stay keyed down for a long time while adjusting it, especially if the carrier is set really high at first. The 8417 tube in these little modulators is hard to come by now and expensive. Don't be rough with the tuner neither as it's just a carbon slug on the end of a threaded metal shaft.

Re: PICTURES OF YOUR SETUP
It is an RF Choke, sometimes called an ugly balun. It is made of pvc pipe, and the coax is wrapped around it.. the RF Choke prevents your transmitted signal from bleeding back down the coax and causing interference. I run a 1x6 custom built amplifier on a power supply, I have very close neighbors-- and no interference complaints whatsoever.. The tip of the antenna is only 30 feet up.str8stroke wrote:maniac, dumb question: whats that black thing that looks like a coffee can on your antenna? Looks like a rotor? how do you make a choke like that, meaning how long and wide pvc,how many times the coax is wrapped.

Re: PICTURES OF YOUR SETUP
I don't know exactly what the "scientific formula" is for amount of wraps or whatever--
I made mine from a plastic pool skimmer (about 5" outside diameter)-- and wrapped the coax around it 10 or 12 times i think.
It works perfect for what I need. It cut out the interference.
I got some 1 1/2" pvc, and made some collars to attach the skimmer, and insulate the coax from the metal mast.
Do some "trial and error" testing, and you'll find a way that works for you.
