Different world

I had a chance to hear some SSB tonight when the band opened up. I think my faith in 11 meters has been renewed--no trash talk, toys or testosterone. It is truly a different world than AM. Thank goodness.

Yep, SSB operators tend to be much more "adult" in their interactions with other operators. More like ham operators. You still got some morons as with any other public type thing but a lot fewer of them.

I too have come to love SSB. So many benefits of it and yes the "light" procedural practices and courtesy you find on SSB is nice all about DX. I wish more guys ran SSB. I know alot do but around my area they have yet to catch on. Does anybody know if there is a reason a majority of operators run LSB and not USB? I heard on freeband USB is super common.

Dang, u guys had me excited when I first saw this topic. Here I am thinking "wow, these guys are talking about my favorite old tv show" complete with dwayne wayne and whitney, and here we are just talking about cb's civilized mode. Oh well, ssb can be fun. It isn't the fun slugfest that am is but does offer more opportunity at an actual conversation that is more than the usual repeating of numbers and every operator using a fake accent and saying he's "in tha back woods" even when he's in the city. SSB on cb is quite close to what you hear on the ham bands but just a little more casual, and that's fine with me.

Yes SSB can be very fun. Every now and then you get an operator trying to use "echo" or some kind of gimick but most operators are civil.

Back in '91 I had a nostalgic re-interest in 11 meters (am), but the language was so foul I didn't dare listen to either my base or mobile when the kids were around. It drove me to take my Technician test and sell my CBs and antennas. I've progressed through ham tickets over the years and never looked back. Recently I took another look CB and found it compeletely dead. Last night's band opening was a blast, and my first chance to actually hear and work some SSB on 11 meters. You are right, it is a lot like the ham bands, with a little less structure. The Super Bowl on 6, well ... :icon_rolleyes:

Well it seems you have twice the years in the hobby as I do but I still have to send you a wave from this side of the fence. I am familiar with Amateur practice and that light procedural found on 11 meter Pi r @ t radio . Though I still look towards owning a full blown HF system. there is nothing more boring then a dead silent radio. I mean whatever band you are on....radio cannot me more boring then a radio that only reads static. So anyways.....good to hear your side on both sides of the spectrum. Im going to work 11meters here....then when I have funds I am going to work amateur...BUT...Im still going to work the American roots of it all. Thats right CB Radio Gentlemen.

wifi,

Now that's a R/C looking car--a 9' whip on the roof of a Honda! Thanks for the wave from PA. I got into amateur radio slowly; first a Tech ticket and a 2 meter hand-held, then a 2 meter mobile for a few years, then I up-graded to General and saved up for a cheap HF transceiver I could afford. Then a better rig and up-graded to Advanced, and then ( ) a better (!) HF rig. This doesn't count different antennas. It's really an addiction, like black rifles :icon_e_wink:

Once you get a taste of the performance of a good HF transceiver, you are spoiled forever. But, I like all radio, no matter the band.

I appreciate your comment on the RC car. Most of the comments I get about that mobile is negative ! So I appreciate it !
Advanced ticket huh? Good stuff ! General class here!Spoiled forever aye? thus far Its really been an addiction and if you dont have money to play with its a terrible tease! Im going to get there though!

SSB is cool. There are times when we are talking local and the band sounds dead and all of a sudden someone hundreds of miles away checks in there.(Out of the blue.) The best part about it I am running 12 watts pep. You do get better 11 meter operators on there.
