Post by otter »

when i hook up an amp to SSB.
I know that AM has to have a dead key of about 1 or 2 watts.
what should SSB dead key at in order to run am amp on it?
and is a Palomar 600 a good amp for SSB?

SSB deadkey will be about nothing. When you modulate you produce the wattage.

If your amp has a SSB relay then it will work fine.

I believe your Palomar 600 is an AB1 amp and has the SSB delay switch. Friend of mine has a Palomar 1000 (2x4, in his mobile) and it sounds great on SSB, as does his Galaxy 77. Had a guy the other day ask him if he was on a base (yes, he is that clear and loud).

Any amp that has a mode switch that says AM/SSB will work fine. As mentioned, the amp won't key up on SSB until you talk because there's no power output until then. The SSB mode on these amps switches in a capacitor that charges up when you first start talking and slowly discharges between words to keep the relay energized so it isn't constantly clicking back and forth which wears it out.
