FRS/GMRS radios

Hey guys. My mom has asked me what I want for Christmas and I was thinking about asking for some FRS/GMRS radios to take hunting. I don't really know a whole lot about them so I figured I'd ask the experts here. (Yes, that even includes drdx.) Tell about the radios you use and what you like or don't like about them. What things should I look for in those radios.

I have a pair of COBRA PR 3000 radios,they work well but none of these radios will talk as far as the companies say they will they are line of site radios ( NO ABSTRUCTIONS IN THE WAY AND THE ANTENNAS ARE VERY POOR) and unless you only use them on he FRS channels which only put out 500 milawats you need a licence to oporate them on GMRS which is 2 watts and the licence is $85.00. You would be better off getting MURS radios 2watts and no licence required. These BUBBLE PACK RADIOS are not that great IMO. Getting a profesional grade of these radios would be better but way more costly.

I'll have to look into those MURS radios. I'm not familiar with them.

I also didn't think about 2m handhelds. But if I had two of those, but of us would have to be licensed. With GMRS only I would need to be.

I would get murs radios, gmrs radios are everywhere like wally world but the power is low, MURS has 5 chnls license free, but as someone said what they advertise isnt what it does. I use a motorola and get close to a mile if a hill isnt in the way.
On base I use a base radio<modified for MURS, and get 18 to 20 miles.
Anyhow do a quick look for MURS radio and make sure it is on the 151 and 154 frequency, not UHF ...

I agree that going the MURS route would be better than FRS/GMRS. I recently got a sweet deal on four MURS radios. I got all four, including extra batteries, for $56. I wanted something my family could use to stay in contact with each other while in town. The FCC has said it's OK to use gain antennas with these radios, and that will go a long way in getting out better than what the stock antennas do. Another benefit is that these MURS frequencies aren't crowded with a bunch of kid kerchunking, laughing, and carrying on the way they do on the FRS radios. Keep your eyes open on Ebay. That's where I got mine.
