It turns out Mint did not like the older system I was trying to use. I did try other Linux based OS's and I found that UBUNTU is the only one that would install and run well on this older system. I now have a file & print server working well. My only issue is assigning permissions to some of the folders.
Oh, if you use a jet direct card on your printer and connect it to a PC nic card you will need a crossover cable. A USB printer is simple a quick to set up. Make sure you buy or have a printer that is compatible with Linux, Many are not. Cannon, Dell & many others don't work or partially work on Linux.
