Bang for the buck/10 or 11 meter versus 40 channel

Post by Hawgrider » Monday, 20 May 2013, 7:49 AM

Is the power that is available on a connex or gen. Lee or galaxy worth the extra cost of the radio or is my cobra 29 ltd that has been peaked and tuned with a mod kit just as good with a 200 watt box with it. Been thinking about replacing the cobra with a bigger radio .

Thanks for your help!

Hello Hawgrider,
Welcome to the forum. If you are happy with the performance of your Cobra 29 than by all means just get an amp. I prefer an amp over a high powered (built in amplifier) radios because if something goes wrong it will include the amp. The external amp gives you the benefit of using any radio (as long as the amp can handle it). If you decide to upgrade, look for a radio that won't fry the amp, there are plenty to fit the bill.
Check out some of the sponsors, DNJ has excellent prices on amps, GI Joe's for radios, but don't pass up the others (hope it doesn't sound like a commercial).

I never had a cobra 29 but I have a uniden 980. export was an easy choice in my case because I wanted a variable power knob so I could turn my power up and down. Export already has extra frequencies built in. After jumper is moved in my case. Roger beep and echo. the 980 is a very nice radio but very limited in what you can get out of it. I didn't even know what an export radio was until I joined this forum. I like the exports so far. As far as worth the money I'd have to say yes.

Your comparing apples to oranges. The avg export radio will do 30 watts. A cobra with a amp is a different animal. Now if your talking about which would drive a box better then that in its self is a different discussion. Its funny how those that bash export radios because of technically legal issues or the extra channels have no problem advocating the use of illegal amp.

The poster never mentioned want more channels or silly features like roger fart and echo. I assumed he wanted to get out farther because he mentioned buying a bigger radio. When compared the 29 into a 200 watt amp will out perform a lee(Ceteris paribus). I for one dont hate exports and still run a 99v but if performance is what your looking for a two pill trumps dual finals all day.

[quote="hank_612"] features like roger fart and echo./quote]

And neither did I. But (arguendo) he asked if an export would be worth the price compared to a cobra running an amp behind it. I stand by my statement that they are two different discussions. A single final export along with a amp can out preform a cobra with the same amp at times. It's subjective and to the users preference.

The premise of the original post was making a decision whether to add an amp to a 29 or buy a export. At this point I am only continuing to argue to increase my post count. Ordinarily I would let you feel right even though you are clearly not correct.
