Post by 295 antenna » Friday, 09 March 2018, 13:54 PM

Heres a fun Topic for Discussion ,

What matters more ? Audio or carrier? Using the formula that it takes 5 dBs to make one s unit on a radio.

Audio vs. Carrier...Audio all the way! The missing proponent here is the Antanna system. Without a proper antenna system, neither means anything.

I have seen guys with a lot of audio being able to come in over another ones carrier. so to me audio will be the biggest help when talking.

Absolutely. Audio is the best with a properly matched, well tuned,
and high enough antenna. The antenna is key. Without good ears
nobody gonna hear ya anyway.

Well, they go hand in hand. For me it's all about the proper ratio, audio to carrier 4:1. Just to toss out numbers say I have a 10 watt dead key, I would bring up my audio to just around 40 watts PEP. I incorporate a little bit of asymmetry so I can go above the 4:1, say 50-60 watts PEP without carrier pinching. My oscilloscopes are my bible. All depends on how you want to sound. Me personally, I strive to be as clean and clear as possible.

talkin' !

Oh heck, I just noticed how relatively close you are to me. Cool man, maybe if you are ever out my way we could say howdy in person. I am about 12 miles south east of downtown Pittsburgh. Peace.

It takes 6 dB to increase by 1 s unit, 6 dB happens when power is multiplied x 4. 100 % modulation can only be achieved with a 4:1 ratio any modulation above you have to very careful or you will have distortion. Its possible to make well over a 100% modulation and still have asymmetry but most people run a low carrier and lots of swing and this is trashy 99% of the time. The other thing to consider is that the receiving radio can only demodulate about 150% of modulation so anything above that they could not tell anyway. Someone running a 1 watt carrier and 50 watts swing will get their radio cut off by someone running a 10-12 carrier and 50 watts of swing. Clean is mean.

I like em both, audio to be heard, and signal to stomp on my locals.
