I wasn't contemplating getting a vanity but now that it's free I just might. Have to wait til this has been approved, I'll let you know.

Thanks for sharing. I see that the reason is that when a sought after sign comes up (just about any 1x2 i bet) they get so many requests that it costs too much to issue all the refunds.

I have had a 2x2 call in mind for a while that I know is available. Not sure, I have grown kind of attached to my 2x3 sign. Well, it will be at least 3 months so no rush to decide.

Here's a link that makes selecting a Vanity a little easier. I have a feeling when Congress approves the change this may get some use.

If anyone is going to use CW, keep in mind the shorter letters in the call sign helps and should be factored in with the choosing. There are still lots of people using CW even though the requirement has been dropped. Also, some letters almost sound the same on SSB such as M and N for example unless you constantly use phonetics. So carefully look at the available vanity calls and chose wisely the first time.

If vanity calls are free wont that make it near impossible to get one. Its hard enough to get a vanity plate for my car. I can just imagine how hard a call sign will be to get.

Maybe, but I don't think cost has ever been the driving factor. Some people are attached to their call.

Also there are more license plates in a single medium sized city than ham operators in the country, so less competition. Unless you want a 1x2 sign that is.

I tried to get my call sign in Wisconsin and they said it was already taken. I thought that was really strange.

They will keep revolving. Licenses have expired without renewals and people passing on. I was attached to my call but wanted it shorter so I just dropped a letter. The locals around here have gotten sorter calls but the key is they always checked the data base all the time and wait on it. Since the mid 90's, it's a shame I can't get a refund and use it to pay for some equipment to keep the station going. :pale:

The Vanity fee is FREE since September. And for fun here's the fee for Amateur Radio Tags! Not Vanity Tags. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!!

There are more vanity call signs available besides the 1x2 and 2x1. Some use their initials in their name and choose a call sign. Here is a link. I hope sheds some light on it.

How long does it really take for a Vanity call to be approved once the fcc receives the application and it goes through the red light process? The website says 18-20 days. Is that exact or can it be sooner?

I haven't applied for one but you know the government as well as I do,, expect a month to get the new ticket in the mail. It makes it easier if you check the "vanity list", http://www.arrl.org/vanity-call-signs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , before submitting for one just in case it's taken.

Yeah I thought about that too. I Researched it and picked 15 that had been expired for 10-20 years that said available immediately. I think I'm good to go on that unless there's an application ahead of me that's not in database yet. I may have to settle for 2nd or 3rd choice. But Here's a tip for those that apply for a vanity call. Be careful where you apply. It's free through the fcc site but there is other parties charging a fee to do this for you. You won't know you're being charged until you fill out all the paperwork. You don't have to pay it but you just wasted all that time. I THOUGHT I was at the right site the first time to fill out the paperwork but when I hit next step for final step it directed me to a payment page which required a $45.00 fee. So with all that wasted time I closed out the page and started over. The reason I thought it was real is because It was a direct link from a popular ham site so if anyone is on their favorite ham site and it says "apply for a vanity call here" don't waste your time it's not free. Go straight to the fcc site. I know that most people know this already but for the ones that don't I hope it helps save you some money.

Yes the free "vanity" is only through the FCC using their form, some of the clubs have forms that they will submit for you but it comes with a price. I would say $45 is outrageous, most charge $15 or join the club and it's free.

Hehe, I know exactly which popular site and before I checked had a good idea where it sent you. I don't blame the site, I'm sure they are getting paid to have the link and it helps them keep the lights on. As for the group that charges, I know they do a lot of positive stuff for the radio community but that vanity assistance service is not of of them.

It was exact when I got mine back in 2007. Get it in and the weeks will pass before you know it.
