I have been collecting a few unused in the box. Beware buying without power cord a some are Hitachi cords that are hard to find. I bought one radio just for the cord. These are sturdy radios. I collect vintage radios and I like sears and cobra radios. I just bought a stand up base microphone from a gray slant face. Does anyone know if it is amplified. I am sending a black-face Roadtalker out to be tuned up to the max.

Hey DuckSoupe,
Does the desk mic have a number on it, that would make it easier to identify.

that was no biggie. Had several locals get busted with them on channel 91 by FCC way back over on the kansas side of town
roadtalker ssb slant faces parts was made by Hitachi and assembled in Japan

I have two of the old sears slant face mobile am/ssb radios. One is modded for channels the other is virgin.

When i first looked inside I thought it was built to military specs, very heavy duty components and manufacturing, everything internally shielded.

Built like a "brick ... house". Makes the newer stuff look like cheap toys.

I have the schematics & tuning for the Roadtalker model 934.38270700 in PDF.

PM me if you would like me to send it to you.

-- Thursday, 13 November 2014, 11:33 AM --

Wiring the power input isn't too difficult once you identify the pins from the photofacts pictures & diagrams. Two pins for AC another two pins for DC. I used some of that brass hobby tubing that fit snugly over the pins with a slight crimp to snug them up even more, and soldered wire to the other end. Used Epoxy putty to make the connector plug. Crude shade tree technology but it worked well.

NOTE: Some epoxy putty is metal filled, DON'T USE THAT!

The AC or DC plugs are hard to find and expensive too.

I have one of these and, while it seemed to work okay about 3 years ago at my old house.... now it seems like the audio is quiet... power is down.... I am thinking that it just needs a re-cap like nobody's business...because it IS that old.

My father in law's (who got me started in this!) original Cobra 21 (23 Channel),
Same father in law's Cobra 21XLR (40 channel AM),
My SBE Console V AM/SSB Base
And, this Sears Roadtalker 40 SSB

You know, I really have wanted to get good at doing some "low level" radio repairs like that, more for my own education than anything else. I've been thinking for years that you had to have a radio-telephone ops license to legally repair CBs.......

Well....

I have found "chapter and verse" in the FCC scripture where it very CLEARLY says you do not!!! I went to look up the licensing requirements to GET that license.... and right in that document it says you do NOT have to have it for the Citizens Radio service.

But I'll never get that serious about it........ at least I doubt it....

(( Late Reply )) I have had 3 of the Slant Face Roadtalker 40ch SSB's, they were fantastic radios ..... The last one was new old stock- never even turned on still in the original box back in 2005 !

I always wired up a Turner M+3B blue & white mobile amp mic to them and had them peaked & tweaked and loved them.

One of the very best things about them is the squelch has such a fine tune to it when You turn the squelch up or down it s-l-o-w-l-y fades the squelch out very very subtly more than any other radio I have every used or know.

Steve from southern Oregon

I have all ways liked the look of the sears road talkers and have heard that they are good radios.

I Really hope to get one someday but the ssb ones on ebay are a bit high priced in my book.

I've had several of the SSB road talkers years ago. Great radios and easy to work on and peak. If I find on I'll snatch it up fast if it's reasonable.

Love the Sears Roadtalker series of radios. When every I see one I pick it up if it's reasonable. the 40 channel AM/SSB unites were the best.

I picked up a mint 40 channel ssb mobile unit a couple weeks ago. Popped the cover off just to see the board quick. Looks like a cobra 146. Should be a nice little rig. Just have to get some time now to play with it.
