Signal meter DX 2517

Post by Mtn Lynx »

Got my radio today. It transmits and receives good. Swr is fine. Wattage is good. But the signal meter needle shoots all the way up past the red zone when the power is turned on. When I turn it off, it goes back down. On AM it drops down to right at the end of the red as I drop the rf power to 0. When I turn the rf power up, the needle goes past the red. Do I need a new signal meter?

First is it a new or used radio? Second the signal meter shows modulation and receive signal, so when receiving it is staying in the red? Does this on SSB mode too?

This is a used radio. And yes it stays in the red during rreceive and transmit. It is staying above the red even on SSB.

Any recommendations on where to sent it to?

-- Thursday, 01 December 2016, 12:39 PM --

Just talked to a cb tech. My RF power needs to be adjusted inside of the Radio. I'M GOING IN!!! I'm going to try and adjust it after work. He said to go onto cbtricks.com and follow the instructions. Maybe I don't have to send it in. :blackeye:

Fixed my signal meter. VR 15 was set way to high. Thank you cbtricks..... Man I'm happy. Time to fine tune radio :bounce: :bounce:

Thanks. Whoever owned it before randomly started turning adjustment nodes inside the radio. I got it back to normal last night.

CB Tricks gives all the locations and VR's to make the adjustments but don't touch the cans (loads) or you will need to find a good tech. Things like adjusting the meter isn't hard, take a radio that you trust and see what it's meter is reading (receive) and adjust the 2517 to read the same, watts turn the power all the way up into a dummy load that can handle the wattage and adjust it to read what a external watt meter is reading, don't have one than adjust it so the needle isn't pinning to the right, modulation is the same. After that you will need the right equipment to adjust the VR's without letting the smoke out of the radio.

Used my watt meter to reset the am power. The ssb ones were a little complicating but they are reading what they are supposed to now. Luckily did it without smoke. :alien:
Need to invest in more testing equipment.

Update: after a week of mainly listening to skip, I did a radio check on ch 17 Am, got a good report from Portland Oregon today. Motor Mouth Maul heard me after I turned up my power. This radio ROCKS!!!
