Finally dug out what I've kept, and buying some more

#325474

Well, haven't been on the air in over 8 years. I am finally in a position with space and a bit of time to enjoy it again.

I dug out my IMAX2000, mounted it, for now, on a 6 foot mast on the chimney of my garage roof, which is about 15 foot tall. so that puts me roughly 45 feet to the tip I guess. I'll be replacing that mast with 20-30 or upper fence pipe soon!

I have an astron 11a power supply I had to replace a capp and diode in to fix. I am running my unknown branded 2 pill off it (2 sd1446's)

I have a little 4 amp power supply I use for the radio's, all little mobiles now. Uniden pro520 just for kicks, and a midland 77-115 I've had forever just for the channels.

The mic is an Astatic D104.

My meter is a DOSY test center.

Soon I'll be picking up a 148GTL for the mobile, and hopefully a president washington for a base. Pics soon.

Lol. Well, I got my 148gt side mic today. Malaysia, 1992. I can't see a name on the board. MB8719 PLL looks like. It has R131 removed, I'll put that back I think. I took some pics, figured I'd edit my other thread and run with it for this radio.

Cobra 148GTL was never touched except for having R131 removed, which I like. So whatever i do to it I can document it and know what happens. I ordered upgraded caps, put R131 back but with a lesser value to get modulation at about 105% with the power mic way up. Gonna do channels. I read something about changing a few resistors and caps, to widen the bandwidth of the TX and RX filters, and another resistor, R206 I believe, to wide-band the TX. What exactly are these doing I wonder? New thread perhaps?

I also am a new owner of a President Washington, the one with 2 buttons, before Uniden I believe. Don't know what country it was made in. But I'll be researching uprades and mods for this too.

Here are some pictures.

The 148 GTL side mic, 01/1992 build date

Other stuff, power supplies, linear and some radios.
Image

An old Midland 150M and a Realistic TRC-435 I think. The Midland just works, a few extra watts and modulation. The realistic I fixed, had a bad mic jack and internal speaker, little tune-up. Just playing around with them really
Image

My 2 pill linear. I don't know who built it. I have had it for over 10 years. Had to fix a diode recently.
Image

I think the 148GTL is close to done, just replaced all the old 10V dielectric caps for caps at least 16v, higher where they would fit. Put r131 back, got it set to DK at 2.5w and swing. Set up to run before my 2 pill, or a bigger one down the road. I'll add channels soon, maybe an expo kit. Or something I had seen on ebay and the net from Australia. I have the stuff in my garage, running into an IMAX antenna. I'll get that 20ft higher when i can buy the coax.

My President Washington came in the mail today, the two button older one. It works and sounds fantastic! The receive on the 148GTL was pretty good, after the shottky diodes and new transistor it got a bit better, but this thing is quiet! I am loving it. Modulation is only about 60% it seems, but it receives well!

Now to get info and schematics and mods and stuff for it and see what i want to do if anything. Probably just get the modulation up?

Pics to come

Island_860, thanks!

srt8stroke, I Though so too. But the polamar has a different PCB from what I can find on them. I'll have to look into the cobra and superstars. It is messed up now anyway, it's way down on power.

Nice looking Washington. I've said it many times on the forum but I've grown very fond of the Uniden 858 PLL units like your Washington. Yes it pre dates having Unidens name on it but they still built them all. Does it say made in Japan on the back of the case? From my experience it seems all the 858 units were made in Japan just before Uniden switched production to Taiwan and rolled out the 8719 units.
