Wilson 500..........nice

#383295

Post by Chrisnick »

So getting back in CB and I finally got my mobil set up.... I had a Wilson 1000 in the past so I know Wilson rocks.

I chose the 500 because I wasn't ready for a big 1000 on my car. Anyways, I put the 500 on my trunk and out of the box I have a great SWR on all channels. Radio is a PC78ELITE tuned up. Amazingly I am getting very little static unless I drive under power lines. My only contact today was my buddy across town and he sounded great and said I was sounding great and was very loud. I write this because I don't read to much about the 500 so thought I would.. I am surprised with it out of the box..

By the way I hooked the radio up with a radio shack cigarette lighter plug, ZERO engine or electric noise.

Thanks. I wish I could have a base cuz I would love a Stryker 955. And the Stryker is to big for my Sonata.

Maybe when I get me a pick up

I misspoke. I do get some electric feedback when I run my HID headlights. I haven't heard enough strong signals to see if my DSC will also block the signals as well as the feed back.

some time when you get electrical noise you need a better ground if thats not the case make sure your
wires are away from the head light wires

The radio is powered from a cigerette lighter.

I also asked how to correct this in the set up help section.

Thanks.

If the HID's are aftermarket check the manufacturer's website to see if filters are made for them, if original equipment then contact the dealer, most new cars using them should be filtered for noise. The best power connection for the radio is directly to the battery, that should eliminate most noises caused by the wipers, seat and mirror motors, heat/ac blower fan, etc.
There is nothing wrong with the Wilson 500, just a tad bit shorter then the 1000, glad it tuned well. Grounds are important on a radio especially if using a magnet mount antenna, I add one to a case screw.

I am not familiar with the 500. For my car, I have a 1000. For my suv, I run 5000 and I shoot skip with it. A friend has a big Dodge truck, he runs a 5000 and sometimes 102" whip which I am thinking on doing the same. I am coming up with a design for a mechanism to go into my tow hitch but I be able to let up and down. I have to park underground so I like to NOT have to rich over the top to take off the antenna. A tower for the vehicle would be helpful. I submitted a post regarding RF and grounding.

I really like the wilson 5000.. I used to run one back in the day and its a really nice antenna.. Had no problems shooting skip or talking locally when on the way home... Very nice antenna... Another great antenna is the sirio perfomer 5000... My friend installed one on his car and has nothing but great things to say about it.. I heard him on my base from 60 miles out, and this was with his stock cobra 29... :)

I wholeheartedly agree about the Sirios. The Wilsons are very good too, the first one I used was a Lil Will when I also got back into CB radio. That Wilson even though it was around 4ft was spot on with the SWR (1.4 on avg across the band) I guess I was lucky with the quality control on that one! I had it mounted on the roof of my Accord and it did a pretty good job getting out in a heavy suburban city type area. I could normally transmit out and be heard reliably to approx 3-4 miles, on a good day 5-6, but that was also using an Astatic Road Devil Power mic. I can't emphasize enough about spending your money on a GOOD antenna and a mic to be heard out there, good clean modulation is the key!
