My 2950 swing

Post by dnguillory »

Hey guys, always tinkering you know. I have the original 2950 with orange led. Radio is good to go after I changed battery. No issues with radio( vfo skips now and then by 2 but not an issue), but on AM, on low power( I use 1.5 watt on lowest power dead key into my amp) it only swings 10 watts. So, keys at 1.5 to about 11-12 watts. I'd like it to swing 20-25 on AM. What is best way? I use SRA-198 mic and don't want to change to power mic. I have best audio reports from this radio out of all of my radios from 2 friends locally. They say, it's the best radio they've ever heard. I have modulation all the way up. Is there another thing I can do to get double the swing on am that I'm getting without hurting my audio quality?

Thanks for any opinions.

You aren't going to gain one bit of anything by increasing your power from 12 to 20 watts. It takes 4 times the power to make 1 s-unit increase on the receiving end. Leave the radio be if it is getting good reports. If it's not broke, don't mess with it!! JMHO.

You can't have quantity and quality unless you spend some money on good amplifier. Best thing to do let the radio run nice and easy.

I totally agree with everyone, the 2950 isn't a big AM performer anyway, time to buy an amp and let it do the swinging.

I probably should have said that earlier. I am running a 2 pill. The 10w of AM swing is getting me around 75-90 watt from my amp. Other radios into this amp with 25 watts of swing get me 180 watts from amp. That's what I'm after.
But hey, the reports on Sideband is top shelf and AM not bad. Thanks for the input guys, always a pleasure.

What is the 2 pill? You may be able to turn the wattage up (say 2.5 DK) a tad more to get the amp to work for you and still sound good. The thing is you don't want to overdrive the amp with swing wattage, that's when they start sounding terrible.

I appreciate all the input. I'm gonna leave well enough alone. It sounds good and works good and works well with my amp. The stock gives a little better modulation but overall, it rocks. Thanks guys.
