Realistic TRC 448

Post by weedge »

I have searched the threads but have not found anything on a TRC 448. I inherited it from my dad, I don't think he used it much. He was more into am. Does anyone know anything about them. My dad kind of swam against the current sometimes so it may be one of a kind lol. Thanks for any info.

I found an image of that radio on the web. I've never seen one before, but those old realistic units were of good quality and often made by other manufacturers, like uniden. Does it operate on the regular cb channels? I saw one reference for that model that mentioned having an australian channel layout. Have you tried it out?

Hello drdx
I have hooked it up and it seems to work. The usb light does not come on but it could just be the light. I haven't talked to anyone on it. I don't think my dad used it much. It seems to have as good of receive as my 949. I would like to keep it because it belong to my dad but didn't want to put much money in it if it was a dud.
Thanks Weedge

it's actually a very good AM/SSB radio. It is the mobile version of the TRC-458 base radio. there should be lots of good info about it on the web.

I just picked one up last week. Check cbtricks.com for the alignment info and if you google mods you should find out how to turn up the modulation and output power a little. I haven't really done much looking but I did find those few things. If I find any more info I will post it here for you. I will keep an eye here for other posts as well.

Thanks Guys
Well i am glad i don't have the only one around. I would have kept the radio just because it belonged to my dad but it's good to know it's not a dud. It does need the power turned up some. According to my watt meter it only keys about 2-3 watts. I'd like to get it tuned up and give to my youngest son, see if I can get him hooked lol. Thanks again for the info.

Hey Larry,

You have a pretty nice radio there.

Remember that the 'old school' radios can't handle all the tweaking and mods that the newer ones can.

Your son is sure to like it.

Hey Slim Pickens
Thanks for the info. It's above my radio skills, at least at this time, but its nice to know that it can be tweaked. In fact I am starting to think I might have to find a different radio to let my son start out on. Thanks again for the info, if you try any of the mods let me know how you like it.

I had a guy who used to work doing service stuff for Radio Shack back in the day tune up my 448 and unlock the clarifier. He said when I took it to him it was only doing about 3w on am. He turned it up to 10w and turned upp the modulation quite a bit. I just brought it home yesterday and hooked it up to a power supply and my son's A99, which is only about 10' off the ground for tuning purposes. I talked to a local here that I talk to quite a bit and he said he had to pretty near turn his volume all the way down because I was coming in so strong and loud. During our conversation I switched to my 457 though and he said the 448 was almost as loud. Both were hooked to the same antenna. Good thingh for him I wasn't on my .64 groundplane. He tells me when I talk to him on that antenna with a 4w radio I make all the lights in his house brighter.

Thanks Paul
I have been using my 448 in the mobile lately because my 949 off freq. It only shows about 3 watts on my meter also. Maybe radio shack sent them all the same. I have tons of static in the mobile, I didn't realize how lucky I was back in the old days I had no noise in the mobile at all. I need to have mine tuned up. I saw in another thread that you are a carpenter, we have more in common than just a 448, I'm a carpenter also. Keep us posted on your mods.

Just installed the TRC-448 in the mobile this past weekend and I have been talking up a storm ever since. Really happy with this radio and my 10K on my truck.

Here she is.

Now I just gotta get a matching Vol/Sq knob. That one is driving me crazy.

Hi Paul

Thats a nice looking setup. I still have mine in the truck but I am getting a lot of static. I don't know if its the radio or the truck. I didn't have it on the 949. It could be my antenna, it's a cheapo, I start back to work full time on Monday so I'll be looking for a new antenna. I 've heard you say you like your 10K. I'm leaning toward a 10K for my brat and a wilson mag mount for my work truck. Thanks for the update on your 448.

No, it only lights white. But it would be cool if it did change. Thought about putting red lights in my meter so all the lights would match.
