I have never come across this problem before.. Regardless if the mic is plugged in or not, as soon as you turn it on it goes into transmit with a hum in it even when you key the mic and audio into it nothing passes through except the hum. The orange or red display window allows the Blue LEDs to stand out more clearly. If the LEDs were red, then you would not see them, in which case the display lens is usually green when the LEDs are Red.
