I bought one brand new about 8 years ago and then traded it for a grant lt and some cash. It was DOA when I got it. I Sent it in to cobra and it worked fine. These radios weren't too popular but as long as it works and you like it, that's all that matters.

Has your swr changed? Adjustable power on the radio set too high? Too many possibilities with little information to go on. Did they buy a new appliance? You could have gone unnoticed until they bought a new tv? Just guessing.

I love my grant lt. I used mine on a cheap switching power supply and a dipole. Made contact to canada, nj, carolina, etc.

If you have the room and height, I'd build a moxon. There are plenty of calculators. Moxgen is the one I used to get my specs. Some say that it isn't exact but is close enough to tune out. I haven't built one but I'd like to. A lot of good reviews on them too. Gain and rejection in a simple antenna

If you like tinkering like that then just make yourself a hex beam and really see some performance. would it hurt if you used say 1 1/2" pvc with 1 1/4 or 1" slid inside for rigidity? The mast is 1" pvc. Where the support legs ( 45 degrees) meet the mast, I plan on slipping it into a larger piece. Remember that the 29 and 25 use different channel indicators. You can't switch them between the 2 models.

That's actually a question I never thought about. My impression of the purpose of the SSB delay switch was to keep the amp keyed long enough to catch the next modulation peak with no carrier. I can't answer but I'm interested in the answer too.

I'm dropping am only for ssb capable. I found a deal on a lincoln and can't pass it up. This will sit well next to my grant lt. Not sure which I will use mobile but looking forward to having the choice.

Get a 6" stainless steel barrel spring unless you don't mind the spring rusting. My car has enough rust of it's own but next one I get will be SS.

Thanks! It was a lot easier with ssb. When skip was rolling on am, I was lucky to get out against the big stations. I know conditions lasted quite a while here in IL. My last contact was 11:15 pm cst.

I hope you didn't clip much off. With a 6" barrel spring under mine, my swr is under 1.5 throughout the 40 channels I have. Make sure all is grounded well too.

I also agree with the heavier spring. My 102 sways around and wind load on the interstate makes it lean back quite a bit even with the heavier spring. If you don't want rust deposits under the spring, spend a few extra $ and buy a SS spring. My trunk has rust deposits around the mount.

Nice! Mine is off the trunk to keep it slightly lower to the ground, out of tree limbs and the occasional power wires at an arbys. It's a great choice and hard to beat.

Make sure the body is well grounded. My civic needed a little extra grounding.
If you're using a spring, make sure it's SS. Regular steel will obviously rust but it leaves rust deposits on anything below it. How's your SWR?

I think the 2n2906 or maybe 07 is a more robust version if the transistor you replaced. I don't like the keying circuit they used. Seems to be a common problem. I picked mine up at rat shack after my desoldering iron gave up the ghost. It's pretty cheap as I remember. Just use the soldering iron to hold the braid against the solder and it will soak up the solder as it melts. Just be careful not to overheat the traces.

I would agree with Jesse James dallas. The diode mod helps a lot on the cobras. With the 10m radios it's easy to overdrive an amp.
