I like the RM amps. The KL503 gives you around 300 watts and you can usually find them for around $150.00 brand new. They're mosfet AB amps and sound really nice on SSB when driven correctly. I mounted my Larsen with the NMO mount through the roof of my Suzuki. I put another NMO mount on my Nissans Trunk lid. I only use the UHF mounts for my HF antennas. I had the same thing happen one time. Mine was a simple antenna connection at the pl259 going to my amp. It had barely worked a little loose. I'd key the mic and the car would start jumping. AC would fail Etc..

I had this radio for a while. Curious to see if you have issues in the winter time. Mine was brand new and worked fine in summer time but in the winter the modulation lamp would come on in receive mode until the car warmed up for around 20 minutes. After using this radio for a couple of months I notice that it doesn't sound all that great when tuned to 11 meters in the AM mode. It's hard to explain but the sound seems to be flat and compressed. SSB is fine just the AM. what is the reason for this?

I wouldn't plug it into a lighter socket. Lighter socket not designed for the amperage the amp will draw. I'd run 10 gauge to the battery.
