Are you running a coiled coax RF choke at the base of the antenna feed? Sounds like the surround has some speaker wire that is acting like an accidental antenna due to being accidentally the right length possibly.

Whips are super wide banded. I had a 102 no spring and it was a tad short for CB but still fine swr wise and I could use it up on 10 around 28.4 and it had a barely tolerable swr of almost 2:1. If you are already doing 30-40 watts then that amp would only add an s-unit or so on the other end and you would want to back the radio down for sure to run it. A 4 transistor amp would be perfect for that radio and yield you around 400 watts and 1.5 s-units or so.

Doesn't that radio have a stock up down mic? I may be wrong. Check the road devil mic connection or wiring. Sounds like it is triggering the up down button circuitry.

You would want them to overlap as little as possible if any. How tall is the tower? Are you using a choke at the feed? The tower may want to radiate more if it is of an unfortunate length. Is this for local talking or more for skip? Is it alone on the tower or other stuff above?

What are your mounting options and desires? Anything short and/or base loaded can be improved upon by going taller, less coil, better coil placement, or better yet no coil at all. Base loaded are the least efficient and once you are below 48 inches tall the efficiency really falls off.

You can make one from a power cord. The only thing you will need is some coax and a way to check the swr on the antenna. If swr is something you need help with then let us know but I'm sure your dad has that covered.

That power rating you see on the antenna doesn't represent its ability to work any better but rather it's rated level of wattage it can take in. Regardless of the antenna type, anything in the 35 inch range is going to be limiting the a efficiency a ton. But, experimentation is what it is all about. Let us know how it turns out. If you were ever going to attempt efficiency at that height range then this style is the way to go.

I run a low pass filter after the radio and before the amps. Depending on how clean the radio is, it can make a real difference in the readings. Garbage in, more garbage out and I figure I may as well nip it at the bud before the 54mhz harmonics hit the antenna and my reflect rears its ugly head. Av...
