i would send it to RCI to have it repaired that is a pricey radio to go digging around inside the display could be something simple and a good tech could fix it up in know time . Either way fix it yourself or send it out it's still cheaper than buying a new radio.

12 volt . The adapter that plugs into your wall outlet changes 120 volt AC. to 12 volt DC. Any 12 volt battery will work .

Check out the Galaxy DX959 it has PA and a bunch of other goodies to play with. Once you get one of these you wont need anything else for a while. You are right spend the extra money on the antenna system and look into a better radio later.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Av8r1 funny thing about those BIG high powered radios they always seem to have issues one way or the other. Don't look down on RCI they do make good radios as with all makes and models there always a bad one in the bunch. Hope you have better luck with your radio.

Oh yes the Galaxy DX929 is a cool little radio add a foot warmer and a good antenna you'll be styling for sure. That old vintage Messenger can be brought back to life i'm sure it just needs some TLC. It to is a nice radio and worth tuning up.

The Galaxy DX959 is only a 40 channel radio upper and lower sideband is simply a mode. The frequency or channel is the same weather your on AM,FM,CW,or SSB these are called modes.

I sometimes use the preamp in the mobile when parked somewhere but for the most part it's pointless . If you have a weak recieve and you turn the preamp on you have a weak receive with a lot of static and ground noise.

As good as the Wilson antennas perform my 102 inch whip still reigns supreme in my book on performance and durability. Don't get me wrong i like the Wilson antennas and i run a Wlson 5000 on one of my vehicles it's just that the 102 inch whip seems to hear and talk a little better.

Put the spring on and hook the SWR meter up to it and see what happens .If you get that whip tuned in with a low SWR your going to make a lot of contacts on SSB you'll love it.

A rigid mounted antenna in your situation would probably be the best choise . Ground your tool box to the vehicle somehow and you should be fine. Have as much of the antenna over the roof as possible too is something to think about when installing you new setup. Higher is always better .
