i think collins radio pioneered SSB during WW2 and sold the first SSB ham transceiver ever made. johnson sold the first SSB CB mobile.

im not worried abut the abuse on the radio. i enjoy taking beat up old radios and making them talk loud. needless to say, i rarely spend more than $20 on a cobra 25 or something similar.

you can put in higher voltage rated caps but NEVER lower. they can explode and cause more damage.

seen it first hand. was working a vhf ham radio contest on a really col night. temps in the 30's. the PLL in the radio was out of lock and stayed that way for a good 30min until the radio warmed up.

talked to a boat load of folks on skip the past few days. last night the band went bonkers around 9pm or so. got the usual skip a few states over in different directions but the cool one was frogman in cocoa beach. talk about high angle skip. the guy is just two hundred miles away!

im an avid fan of solar. i ran floridas only 100% solar power repeater until lightning took it out. panels are pricey but can be found used. get glass face, silicone cell panels. they will easily last 15 years or more.

sweep tubes are expensive. $40 or so for a known good to NOS sweep tube in these parts. in your case thats $160 and at the end of the day you have a very used amp.

well, it receives fine and does transmit a dead carrier. no tx audio. guess its going on the bench soon. the ptt feels mushy so i hope its just a mic issue.
