An antenna doesn't necessarily need a ground to function. Think of what you're trying to set up as a variation of a dipole. That's why I mentioned the radial, you're missing the other half of the antenna.

Class of operation has nothing to do with this. A class ab amp can break into oscillation and trash the band too. If the amp isn't oscillating I'd test the transmitter next. It's likely an export, had some crazy channel mods done or just a good overall hack job.

So the cables you get good readings with are a different length than the ones the don't work? So the cables you get good readings with are a different length than the ones the don't work? It really sounds like you have some antenna or amplifier issues that is being masked by certain lengths of coax and making you think you have a bad jumper. Happens a lot.

Are you making/buying bad cables or are different length jumpers making things happen that you don't quite understand? Even the cheapest truckstop coax will work fine with the power level you are using.

Turn the amp off and see if the power from the radio only can be adjusted smoothly. Then you'll know if it's the radio causing the problem. If it's not the radio the amp may be oscillating at a certain power level. An oscilloscope is the best tool to see it but an swr meter can be a quick and dirty ...

A few guys here have installed condenser elements in their d104s. Some also use a circuit board that a local guy builds. It replaces the amp and the contacts with a relay. They sound great but really arent d104s anymore. :mrgreen:

A lot of people like the d104. They are nice but they are old and many of them have bad elements. Its rare to find 2 that sound alike. Most guys around here use a d104 or a Turner desk mic. The 5k pot will work. The adjustment will be more touchy.

Phantom power gives the mic with the power it needs through the mic cord. It doesn't change the sound, a condenser mic element needs to be powered or it won't work at all.

The only thing I would add is a few ferrite cores around the coax at the antenna for a common mode choke. If you have any rfi it will help. I ran a mount like this before I installed a puck on the roof.

That's close if it's a dave made style amplifier. Usually 180pf on the input and 150pf on the output if memory serves me. The output transformers talking may be due to the output tuning being off or possibly a dirty radio.

Better how? If the other supply was too small you may have had less power output. A quick test with a volt meter will tell you. Poor filtering could cause TX or RX noise too.

Most rigs use the same murata filters. Don't know the p/n off the top of my head but if you do some digging you can find some literature from murata with all the filters they offer and the part numbers.

It's hard to tell by the pictures but the work is sloppy. Things line the knob on the back and the big honking electrolytic capacitors, one of them leaning over into the rf output section makes me really doubt the ability of the person that did it. It depends on the length. As with most antennas the longer Firestick will perform better than the shorter ones. A 7 footer on a proper antenna mount will work very well. I personally prefer a skipshooter antenna.

You can run a lot of power in a modern vehicle but you have to follow the rules. It's not much different than a base amplifier. 3 phase from the alternator to the HV transformer. The rectifiers and everything else will be the same as a base amplifier. Most regulate plate voltage with engine speed but a couple of guys were building HV regulators...not sure if they're still around...
